Benjamin’s first new bicyle was a Raleigh Lenton Sports, 4 speed in green. A new cycling club had just started up, Abbey Road Club in Arbroath, so he joined that and also the Cyclist’s Touring Club. A fews later he bought a Flying Scot racing frame and slowly built it up to a complete machine with a fixed gear.

An early family tour was at the suggestion of my two daughters who wished to ride the  End to End to raise money for charity, the eldest Alison had already joined the Audax cycling club who had such an event to be completed within 14 days. the following year 1982 it was on, We took the train to Penzance with 2 solo bikes and a tandem and camping gear. In Scotland we took a detour to visit grandparents and 13 days and a bit later arrived at John o’ Groats. We then cycled to Wick and caught a train to Edinburgh where we found no trains were travelling to England. Just as well we had the bikes. Prior to the trip the 3 children had gone round the villages asking for £1 if they completed the trip The total collected was £3500 which was donated to four national charities, a great sum in 1982.
